The Jim L. Walker, Arizona Chapter of the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation was originally founded in 1972 by Peggy Marquard. It has grown from 16 members at that first meeting to just over 900 members, many afflicted with MG, but many also without the disease, who simply care and want to help.
Jim Walker was among the 16 people to attend this first meeting. Officers were elected and the first steps were taken to become an ‘Official Chapter’. Later that same year the charter of the Arizona Chapter of the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation was approved and Jim Walker operated the business and services that were provided by the chapter.
In 1996 Jim retired, and the Board of Directors at that time unanimously approved to change the chapter name to The Jim L. Walker, Arizona Chapter of the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation.
Jim passed away on March 21st, 2000, and though he suffered for years from the effects of myasthenia gravis, he never complained or got angry. He just got things done. He spent many hours volunteering for the Arizona Chapter- making calls, organizing fund-raisers, preparing mailings, answering questions, and doing whatever he could to educate people about this disease and help those afflicted by it.
